Mermaid’s Cave

Description

Dunluce, Co. Antrim

Underneath the 17th century medieval castle of Dunluce which is located on the north Antrim coast lies ‘Mermaid’s Cave’ which predates the castle. The castle itself is perched on basalt cliffs 100 feet above the ocean. Entering the cave through the narrow opening under the castle reveals the sixty feet high cavern. It gives you an eerie feeling as you can nearly feel the weight of the rock and mighty castle straining above you. It is believed that this cave was used to escape the castle during several sieges.
